2010 proved to be another great year for the PS3. In January I would have predicted that this would be a no brainer with expected release of Final Fantasy 13. Then I played it. Brother it was no Final Fantasy 12. The next few games wowed me.
Let's start with Fallout: New Vegas. The game is an amazing follow up to last year's Fallout 3. The only negative is that it's pretty much more of the same. The positive is who cares it's fucking awesome. If you haven't check out the movie "A Boy and His Dog". It stars a sober Don Johnson and was the inspiration for Fallout's nuclear wasteland.
Moving from one desert to the next brings us to Red Dead Redemption. Made by the same company as the Grand Theft Auto series, RockStar out did themselves with their take on the wild west. I spent a majority of my time not actually taking following the story line as much simply riding around on my horse and taking in the world they created. They introduced these random interactions that took place as you rode across the countryside. Once some lady tried to get me killed by luring me into a ambush so I pulled a Snidely Whiplash and left her tied to a train track. Then on another occasion some idiot tried to steal my horse so I pulled him off with my lasso, doused him in my wolf bait and rode off letting nature take it's course. Video games have come such a long way since pong. Overall the game is by far not only one of the best games of the year, but of the PS3 in general. They just recently released a $10 add-on which is additional 6-8 hours of play that adds a zombie apocalypse. I have not played this yet. If I had, it would probably would have taken best in show.
Next up, God of War 3. I probably played about a grand total of 5 minutes before I declared this the best game of 2010. Red Dead was a saga, but God of War was epic. The sheer scale of the game, the attention to detail, and their fevered embrace of brutality made this a win win. Violently happy is probably the best way to describe my feelings of this game.
With all that said I still find myself surprised that God of War stood out as a solid runner up to this year's best (in my humble opinion) Heavy Rain. It's a surprisingly suspenseful crime story. You play the game through the eyes of four main characters. In this game decisions have meaning, actions have consequences, and there are no do overs. Heavy Rain stands the most due to it's game play. Instead of button mashing you follow a series of actions on the screen and depending on how well you complete those sequences determines what happens next in the game. The game has several different outcomes depending on what happens. You can actually die as one of the main characters and the story goes on. This game stands out simply due to how unique and interesting it was. I have never played anything like it year to date and I highly recommend the experience.
