One of my favorite nerd blogs is The Science of Sport. It's by a couple of guys from South Africa, and topics have ranged from doping in cycling, to Castor Semenya and the benefits afforded by her gender.
Currently their topics are concerning the World Cup. I've always wondered how far soccer players run, and how much work they actually do. This article breaks it down and compares it to rugby.
Interesting if you're science-y and nerdy, and sporty like me.
