Top Oddball Interview Questions Of 2009

Submitted Monday, January 18, 2010 by adam | Category: Odd
There are a couple of high-tech companies that are famous (or infamous, El Guapo) for asking seemingly bizarre questions during the interview process. Personally, I have had a few interviews at companies with a similar flair for the obscure. Glassdog.com, an anonymous employer review website, has collected some of its favorites for 2009. Does anybody have any favorite interview questions they would like to share?

I have two to share.

First, the last time I interviewed for a real job (October 2008) one of my interviewers asked me what was the best 49-cents I'd ever spent. I had no idea. He was, of course, referring to the Paul Westerberg album 49:00 which cost, well you get it.

Second, I did a phone interview with a potential freelance client in San Francisco. She asked me my astrological sign. For real.

Here are a couple I have had:

If you were a window washer, how much would you charge to wash every window in Minneapolis?

How many piano tuners are there in Chicago?

and a longer one...

"U2" has a concert that starts in 17 minutes and they must all cross a bridge to get there. All four men begin on the same side of the bridge. You must help them across to the other side. It is night. There is one flashlight. A maximum of two people can cross at one time. Any party who crosses, either 1 or 2 people, must have the flashlight with them. The flashlight must be walked back and forth, it cannot be thrown etc.

Each band member walks at a different speed. A pair must walk together at the rate of the slower man's pace:

Bono:- 1 minute to cross Edge:- 2 minutes to cross Adam:- 5 minutes to cross Larry:-10 minutes to cross

For example: if Bono and Larry walk across first, 10 minutes have elapsed when they get to the other side of the bridge. If Larry then returns with the flashlight, a total of 20 minutes have passed and you have failed the mission.

--------

When I am doing the interviewing, I usually ask these:

How would you explain a computer database to a nine year old?

Tell me about a time when you failed.
