My feeling is that it's really just a race against time for the ST and PioneerPress. Similar cities like Seattle and Denver, who also had two daily papers have the same problem. Seattle Post Intelligencer and Rocky Mountain News are both in dire situations.

Normally, I get my news from websites and radio. In terms of hard copy newspapers, I will occasionally read the NY Times and Wall Street Journal, which both have cut down. NYTimes for instance is 1.5 inches narrower than before. However, in a recent moment of plane ride induced boredom, I purchased a Saturday edition Star Tribune, and frankly was surprised to see how meager the paper really was. The business section consisted of two pages (one front, one back) of associated press news. A single local metro business story, then two pages of stock and bond quotes. The "local" section was 4 pages, one classified's section for 6 pages, and an auto feature that had two stories on 4 pages. I think it took me 15 minutes to read it cover to cover.

They also gave their most flagrant right-wing (Katherine Kersten) and left-wing (Nick Coleman) columnists the boot. I didn't see if Coleman had a parting shot, but Kersten pushed out a toilet-snake of confusing, sloppily written, non-partisan uplift about all the great people she met during this job. This after attempting to drive her readers into paroxysms of fear over gays, Muslims, and Obama. I say wha?
